Understanding Diamond Clarity: An Overview

Understanding diamond clarity is an integral part of the Four Cs of diamonds – Cut, Color, Clarity, and Carat weight. These four characteristics collectively determine the quality and price of a diamond.

Among these, clarity plays a crucial role as it directly influences a diamond’s sparkle and aesthetic appeal. As such, getting a grasp on diamond clarity is invaluable, whether you’re a diamond enthusiast, a prospective buyer, or simply someone keen on learning about these precious stones.

Analyzing the Diamond Clarity Chart

Diamond Clarity Chart
Diamond Clarity Chart

Diamond clarity is measured using a scale developed by the Gemological Institute of America®  (GIA). It’s a visual representation that categorizes diamonds based on their internal and external imperfections, also known as inclusions and blemishes.

To read and interpret the chart, you start at the left, which represents the highest clarity, and work your way to the right. Each grade has a specific range of inclusions and blemishes that determine its position on the chart. The lower you go on the chart, the more noticeable the inclusions become.

The chart above is a simple representation of the more detailed categories. The GIA has 6 categories of clarity, with some being divided. In all there are 11 specific grade levels. Here is a break down of these categories:

  • Flawless (FL) – Under 10x magnification there are no inclusions or blemishes visible
  • Internally Flawless (IF) – Under 10x magnification there are no inclusions visible
  • Very, Very Slightly Included (VVS1 and VVS2) – Under 10x magnification there are inclusions so slight they are difficult for a skilled grader to see
  • Very Slightly Included (VS1 and VS2) – Under 10x magnification inclusions are observed with effort but can be characterized as minor.
  • Slightly Included (SI1 and SI2) – Under 10x magnification inclusions are noticeable
  • Included (I1, I2, and I3) – Under 10x magnification inclusions are obvious which may affect transparency and brilliance.

How Diamond Clarity Affects the Price

A Flawless diamond, which has no internal or external flaws, is exceptionally rare and thus, commands a higher price. This category, known as the “all diamond” clarity, or the (FL) grade is characterized by the absence of inclusions or blemishes, even when viewed under 10x magnification by a skilled grader. Achieving this level of perfection in nature is extremely rare. Consequently, FL diamonds are highly prized and command premium prices.

The majority of diamonds contain minute inclusions formed during their creation billions of years ago. These characteristics make each diamond unique but also limit the number that achieves the “all diamond” clarity grade.

Diamonds in the lower graded categories have visible inclusions or blemishes, reducing their aesthetic appeal and value. However, it’s important to note that many inclusions and blemishes are not visible to the naked eye, and diamonds in grades as low as Slightly Included can still appear flawless when viewed without magnification.

The Relationship Between Carat Weight and Carat Clarity

Carat weight has a significant influence on perceived clarity in diamonds. Simply put, this concept, often referred to as carat clarity, alludes to the fact that larger diamonds tend to show inclusions and blemishes more easily than smaller ones. This is because the size of a diamond can magnify internal and external flaws, making them more noticeable to the naked eye.

However, it’s essential to balance carat weight and clarity when choosing a diamond. While a larger diamond may have more apparent flaws, a higher clarity grade doesn’t necessarily mean it’s the best choice.

Sometimes, a diamond with a lower clarity grade but with inclusions smartly positioned or smaller in size might look just as flawless to an untrained eye. Furthermore, it’s worth considering that diamonds with lower clarity grades can be more affordable while still offering an appealing look.

How to Choose the Best Clarity Diamond: A Guide for Consumers

When deciding on the clarity grade for your diamond, several factors come into play. Your personal preference, budget, and the diamond’s size and shape are all significant considerations.

Remember, the best clarity diamond is not necessarily the one with the highest grade, but the one that offers the best balance between quality and cost.

As mentioned previously, the impact of diamond clarity on price is undeniable. Generally, the higher the clarity grade, the more expensive the diamond. However, diamonds with slight inclusions that are invisible to the naked eye can offer excellent value. The perceived clarity of such diamonds can be just as good as those of higher grades but at a more affordable price.

When viewing diamonds of different clarity grades, it’s essential to keep in mind that many inclusions are microscopic. They don’t affect the beauty of the diamond to the unaided eye. It’s also worth noting that the setting of a diamond can mask some inclusions, enhancing the overall appearance of the stone.
